US/AMERICAS:

US jobless claims dropped to a 52-year low last week after dropping by 28,000 to 187,000, showing a strengthening labor market. Some believe the strong figure may promote the Fed to raise rates by 50 basis points at the next meeting rather than the expected 25.

The personal consumption expenditure price index (PCE) rose 5.4% in March on an annual basis. That is the most significant leap since April of 1983. Headline PCE spiked 6.4%, the fastest pace since January 1982, as the cost of gas and food is on the rise. Consumer spending, accounting for over two-thirds of US GDP, rose by a marginal 0.2%.

US payrolls advanced by 455,000 in March, surpassing expectations by 5,000 positions, according to the latest ADP report released this Wednesday. February’s figures were revised to reflect a rise of 486,000 positions. This would bring ADP’s total estimate of Q1 hirings to 1.45 million. Leisure and hospitality saw the most notable increase of 161,000 hires, while education and health services added an additional 72,000 positions, and business services added 61,000. This report comes ahead of the much-anticipated nonfarm payrolls report due to be released on Friday by the Labor Department.
