Retail sales in the US fell 1.9% in December, significantly worse than the projected 0.1% decrease. The Labor Department stated that excluding autos, sales dropped 2.3% during the last month of 2021. Monthly retail sales do not factor in inflation, which means that spending significantly slowed during an otherwise robust holiday shopping season. Last year presented a strong overall recovery, however, after retail sales rose 16.9% from 2020 amid the worst of the pandemic.
