US/AMERICAS:

Answer

UBS has agreed to pay $1.4 billion in penalties for allegedly defrauding investors by selling mortgage-backed securities prior to the Great Recession. The settlement resolves claims that UBS made false and misleading statements to buyers of residential mortgage-backed securities, downplaying the fact that the underlying loans were of poor quality. The settlement is part of the US government’s efforts to hold banks accountable for their role in the financial crisis of 2008. The settlement also reflects the government’s commitment to protecting investors and ensuring that financial institutions are held responsible for their actions.
