Canada’s Finance Minister has emphasized the government’s commitment to preserving the competitiveness of Canadian financial institutions in global wholesale markets to prevent a recession amid the global financial crisis. The Bank of Canada has projected a 0.4% contraction in the fourth quarter of 2023 and zero growth in the first quarter of 2024, meeting the technical criteria for a recession, which entails two consecutive quarters of economic decline. The EU has raised security concerns about the trade in “golden passports” and vowed to tighten visa controls after revealing that five Caribbean states have sold citizenship to 88,000 individuals from countries including Iran, Russia, and China.
