  • NIKKEI 225 decreased 102.20 points or -0.36% to 27,927.37
  • Shanghai decreased 18.13 or -0.50% to 3,589.31
  • Hang Seng decreased 417.31 points or -1.76% to 23,349.38
  • ASX 200 increased 3.90 points or 0.05 to 7,245.10
  • Kospi increased 4.92 points or 0.17% to 2,973.25
  • SENSEX decreased 949.32 points or -1.65% to 56,747.14

The major Europe currency markets had a mixed day today:

US/AMERICAS:

It was announced today that Lynn Martin will become the new president of the NYSE once Stacey Cunningham steps down on January 3. Martin is currently president of Intercontinental Exchange’s fixed income and data services business, and her appointment will make her the NYSE’s second female president.

The Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington-based think tank, believes that the US may run out of money between December 21 and January 28.  Shai Akabas, the center’s economic policy director, said, “Those who believe the debt limit can safely be pushed to the back of the December legislative pileup are misinformed. Congress would be flirting with financial disaster if it leaves for the holiday recess without addressing the debt limit.” The current debt limit is close to $29 trillion. The US has never defaulted on its debt before, and analysts everywhere warn that the consequences would be severe.

Toyota Motors announced that they plan to build a new facility in North Carolina. The $1.29 billion battery plant will cater to Toyota’s push to EV. The facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, is poised to create 200,000 EV per year beginning in 2025. The new plant will create an additional 1,750 jobs.

US Market Closings:

  • Dow advanced 646.95 points or 1.87% to 35,227.03
  • S&P 500 advanced 53.24 points or 1.17% to 4,591.67
  • Nasdaq advanced 129.68 points or 0.93% to 15,223.15
  • Russell 2000 advanced 44.17 points or 2.05% to 2,203.48

 

Canada Market Closings:

  • TSX Composite advanced 227.83 points or 1.1% to 20,861.1
  • TSX 60 advanced 12.72 points or 1.02% to 1,264.32

 

Brazil Market Closing:

  • Bovespa advanced 1,789.18 points or 1.7% to 106,858.87

The oil markets had a mixed day today:

 

  • Crude Oil increased 3.65 USD/BBL or 5.51% to 69.9100
  • Brent increased 3.64 USD/BBL or 5.21% to 73.5200
  • Natural gas decreased 0.449 USD/MMBtu or -10.87% to 3.6830
  • Gasoline increased 0.1023 USD/GAL or 5.24% to 2.0552
  • Heating oil increased 0.0816 USD/GAL or 3.89% to 2.1800
