US/AMERICAS:

Initial unemployment claims rose by 2,000 positions last week, according to the US Department of Labor. Total filings reached 216,000 for the week of December 17, while the previous week was revised to reflect an increase of 3,000 from 211,000 to 214,000. The four-week moving average has declined by 6,250 to 221,750.

The US Senate passed its latest spending bill to the tune of $1.7 trillion. The measure comes a day after Ukraine’s President Zelensky met with Washington officials to request additional aid for the war against Russia. The bill, which passed 68-29, will allot $858 billion for defense programs and $772.5 billion for non-defense discretionary programs. Ukraine will receive $44.9 billion in military and humanitarian aid.
