Basiliscus & Marcus (475-476AD)

Basiliscus Marcus solidus

Basiliscus was an Eastern Roman general and usurper, raised his son Marcus to the rank of Caesar in 475AD and later to Augustus, being co-emperor. His name appears on the coinage but not his portrait. Marcus died August 476AD with his mother Zenonis. When Zeno reoccupied Constantinople in late August 476AD, Marcus hid in a church with his parents. Zeno swore he would not spill their blood and instead had them exiled to Limnae in Cappadocia, where they were then starved to death from exposure in a cistern.
